VILLAGE DES HERMAUX

The village of Les Hermaux is an authentic village in the foothills of the Aubrac, with basalt and granite stone architecture Its origin seems to be linked to the existence of a castle of which only the old chapel remains: the choir of the present church. The old common buildings are still visible: oven, chestnut dryer, covered fountain...

The name of the village of Les Hermaux reminds us of the way in which the old deserted and uncultivated lands were called under the Ancien Régime : the "hermes". But today, when you cross the surrounding meadows, you will see that the land is well and truly cultivated.

Les Hermaux is a small authentic village where most of the houses have kept their stone walls, dark basalt and granite stones, one of the main characteristics of the buildings in the foothills of the Aubrac plateau. Its very ancient origin is linked to the existence of a castle near the church, of which unfortunately only the chapel remains, which was transformed into a parish church and of which only the choir remains in the current church.

You will not fail to notice the common buildings such as the oven, the chestnut dryer, the covered fountain: they are indicated by a slate plaque, written in French and Occitan. These plaques have been affixed to remind us of these ancient uses
