SAINT-PRIVAT-DU-FAU
The village of Saint-Privat-du-Fau is known in popular belief for a story linked to the Beast of Gévaudan The farms in the village are also a fine example of the architecture and woodwork of the Haute-Lozère.
The village of Saint-Privat-du-Fau owes its fame to the fountain called "Font basse" located at the bottom of the village. According to local lore, a young girl who came to draw water from this fountain was abducted by the Beast of Gévaudan.
The farms in the village are built as a single body housing both the dwelling and the large stable. The regularity of the granite foundations and the roofs crowned with schist slates are noteworthy. Typical of the region, the entrance doors of the farms are topped by a lintel where the date of construction is generally inscribed. The porches of the stables are massive.
Do not hesitate to linger over the old woodwork of the village farms. These are beautifully crafted doors with studded frames dating from the 19th century. The wrought iron knockers are very well preserved and are particularly interesting.
