Le Monastier takes its name from the construction of a Benedictine monastery in 1062 by Aldebert I of Peyre. Over the centuries, the village has developed around the monastery and the Church of Saint Sauveur, which also dates from the 11th century
The recent creation of the GR70, known as the URBAN V path, which goes from Nasbinals to Avignon, makes Le Monastier an important stage of this itinerary, the gateway to the PNR de l'Aubrac.
