Mende has a rich and varied history.
Once the capital of Gévaudan, the city had its heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries, as evidenced by the beautiful houses dotted around the historic center and suburbs.
The town abounds in historic monuments such as the magnificent Notre-Dame and Saint-Privat cathedrals, the Notre-Dame bridge, the Pénitents tower, the 19th-century pharmacy in the former hospital (guided tour only), etc.
