Marvejols is a real journey through time and the history of the Haut-Languedoc.

In its narrow streets dating from the Middle Ages, as you wander around or along the historical circuit, the heritage of the Belle du Gévaudan is revealed.

Marvejols became a "Royal City" in 1307 when Philippe IV le Bel made it his capital in Gévaudan. Fortified during the Hundred Years War, it converted to Protestantism in the 16th century. Besieged by the Duke of Joyeuse's troops, three quarters of the population were massacred, the town burnt down and the fortifications destroyed... Henri IV had the town rebuilt in 1601. The Soubeyran, Chanelles and Théron gates bear witness to this troubled period and were the only way to enter the town
