LA CHAPELLE SAINT-SATURNIN
More discreet, in the centre of the village of Bédouès, the Saint-Saturnin chapel, of Romanesque origin, is interesting for the extraordinary painted decoration it contains.
Built in the 12th century, it is the parish church of the village. Seriously damaged in 1581 by the troops of the Protestant captain Mathieu Merle, it was restored to its original use as a parish church. At the beginning of the 19th century, worship was moved to the collegiate church. In 1810, it was given to the family of the Marquis Cabot de la Fare as a funeral chapel. Between 1838 and 1841, the Marquis had murals painted by an Italian painter who mastered all the techniques of 15th century frescoes. (the chapel is open all year round)
Water infiltration has damaged some of the remarkable murals, and the stained glass windows have been damaged.
the Fondation du Patrimoine, the commune of Bédouès-Cocurès and the association Les Compagnons de la Tour are launching a fundraising campaign.
