EGLISE NOTRE-DAME DE L'ASSOMPTION

Listed as a Historic Monument since 1931, the church of Notre Dame de Barre-des-Cevennes, the former priory of Notre Dame de l'Assomption, is a Romanesque work from the 12th century. It is built in limestone and was rebuilt several times without losing its harmony and elegance. Several enlargements were gradually made to the single nave, vaulted in a semicircular arch... The austerity and sobriety of the Romanesque style have been replaced by large Gothic mullioned windows that light up the chapels built over the centuries..

Only the chevet with its cul-de-four apse decorated with a modillioned cornice, retains its Romanesque style...
