"The church was built in 1861, replacing the old chapel on rue de la Jalerie. This chapel had become the center of the parish in the early 19th century, and is described in a letter from the Bishop of Mende as "a sort of damp, dark cellar where one can neither decently celebrate the holy mysteries nor almost pray without contracting infirmities or being inconvenienced". The project to build a church came to fruition after a veritable battle waged on all fronts by Abbé Rouvière, the bridge's parish priest from 1854 onwards. He obtained the personal support of the Bishop of Mende, exceptional subsidies from the State, donations from private individuals, and even launched a subscription from Catholics all over France."
