EGLISE DE LA CAPELLE
The hamlet of La Capelle is located on a busy road in the Middle Ages The primitive church seems to date from the 12th century and is of Romanesque construction: a single nave with a barrel vault, a double arch and a choir with a barrel vault. The two chapels of the choir were added in the 17th century The whole is nicely decorated with wall paintings, some dating from the Middle Ages.
The hamlet of La Capelle is located on a passageway frequented in the Middle Ages, which crosses the Causse Sauveterre to Sainte-Enimie
The primitive church, which seems to date from the 12th century, was attached to the collegiate church of Saint-Martin de la Canourgue, located not far from there
The building is Romanesque: the single nave is vaulted in barrel vault with double arches that end in engaged columns
The polygonal choir, vaulted in cul-de-four, has undergone transformations that can easily be detected by paying attention to the bays of the apse: only the axial bay remains unchanged, the other two have been cut in order to open the two side chapels in the 17th century.
The elegant bell tower dates from the 19th century.
The walls and vaults are decorated with wall paintings executed from the Middle Ages until the 18th century. The oldest are those in the nave, those in the vaults are more recent.
