"The Lozerian bell towers known as 'clochers de tourmente', are of interest to a cultural and geographical area limited to the fringes of Mount Lozère.

Built in hamlets without a church, these buildings appear as an extension of the voice of the parish church. Their functions, once diversified (angelus, knell, call for the communal school, prevention against hailstorms, sound signal to the attention of people lost in the fog), are today limited to the knell and fires. These bell towers are similar to the type of the single-bay wall bell tower with a round arch and are erected on a rectangular base tapering towards the top. Most of them are built in granite, but also in schist or limestone. Some steeples are equipped with a small bellringer's lodge built into the thickness of the base [...]"
