CHAPELLE SAINT-GERVAIS

Twelve means "resurgence" in Occitan: the Jonte River sinks underground 3km downstream from Meyrueis and only comes out 7km further. It was there that a mill was established, and thus the hamlet of the Douzes was created. The inhabitants of the hamlet remain faithful to the chapel of Saint-Gervais. At each death, the inhabitants take turns to carry the deceased by hand to the cemetery next to the small church and its bell tower.

How to get there

Access to the chapel is via a path starting from the village of Les Douzes.
