The Castle Chapel, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, was once part of the fortified complex of the Castle of the Barons of Apcher. It is first mentioned in 1145.
Built on the rock with granite stones and covered with schist lauze, it offers the particularity of having a small lower room.
The entrance door surmounted by a low arch, makes it possible to discover an interior where the simplicity and the decoration of the architecture are mixed. The birth of the vault is underlined by a light moulding, decorated with a red ochre frieze, a colour that can be found on the double arch and the capitals.
It is in this chapel that the famous "Virgin of Apcher" was "found" in 1960 by Abbot Poudevigne. For security reasons, it is today visible in the collegiate church of Saint-Hippolyte in Malzieu-Ville (6 km from Apcher).
The chapel is freely accessible all year round.
