MUSÉE DE LA MÉTALLURGIE
The town of Saint-Chély d'Apcher experienced a real expansion at the turn of the 20th century thanks to the metallurgical industry. In 1917, the Sollac factory, which today has become Arcelor Mittal, was established and contributed to the economy of the region. Retired workers from the factory have chosen to pay tribute to their profession, their know-how and the Saint-Chély factory by dedicating a museum to it.
The town of Saint Chély d?Apcher owes its expansion at the turn of the 20th century to the establishment of the Sollac metallurgical plant, now Arcelor Mittal.
On the initiative of a small group of factory retirees, the Musée de la Métallurgie was created in 1990 on the first floor of the old hospital. Motivated by their passion, they gathered together old machines, as well as numerous workers? accounts of their work, to evoke the history and production of the Saint-Chély d?Apcher metallurgical industry.
The tour is organized around five main themes: the origins of electrometallurgy, men and their tools, social events, product manufacturing and the modern factory.
The museum is open to individuals on Thursdays in July and August.
Group visits by prior arrangement throughout the year.
