ROCHER DE MOÏSE

The Rocher de Moïse is a set of dolomitic rocks which, depending on the point of view from which it is viewed, give the impression of a group of people.

The rock is located today in the heart of the state forest of Mende, following the reforestation of the surroundings of Mende.

The name of the Rock of Moses can possibly be linked to the presence of a chapel on the same slope overlooking the Lot valley and Mende: the hermitage of Saint Privat.

It is a holy place where tombs dating back to the Merovingian period have been found, and where a chapel, a way of the cross, monumental crosses and caves have been built as places of devotion. The first chaplain would have officiated there in the 12th century.
