LES GORGES DU TARN

Who's never heard of the Gorges du Tarn? Over nearly 50 kilometres, they cut into the limestone rock of the Causse Méjean and the Causse Sauveterre, thus erecting vertiginous cliffs of ochre, reddish or black colour. In some places, the cliffs form a canyon 400 and 500 metres deep.

In Ispagnac, the Gorges du Tarn are a flared and cultivated valley enveloping a meander of the Tarn with many trees.

From Montbrun, the valley becomes narrower and the cirques follow one another, each occupied by a village.

The most picturesque part of the Gorges is situated between Montbrun and La Malène, with a remarkable built heritage, and good views from the road and the heights.

The most spectacular steep and wild looking cliffs follow: the Cirques des Baumes, the Détroits, the Pas de Souci, the Point Sublime, the Roc des Hourtous.

The valley then becomes rectilinear and is overhung by the escarpments of the Vignes up to the confluence with the Jonte.
