LE BES

The Bès is classified as a first category river, with the exception of a 400 m stretch downstream of the Vergne hydroelectric power station, at its mouth in the Grandvals reservoir. This is the only stretch of river in Lozère classified as second category.

The Bès is home to a fine population of dark-coated, highly combative fario trout. A good proportion of the fish reach an average size of 30 cm. A few fine specimens are caught each year with hand-cranked minnows or dry flies, during the big fly hatches in May (late June).

All species of whitewater cyprinids, including minnows and gudgeon, are present in good numbers.

Pike are present in the deeper, calmer parts of the river.
