TOUR DU CANOURGUE

Restored by the Cévennes National Park, this square schist tower dominates the entire French Valley. Its strategic location was put to good use in the early 13th century, forming one of the links in a network of strongholds set up all along the valley.

Restored by the Cévennes National Park, this square schist tower dominates the entire French Valley. Its strategic location was put to good use at the beginning of the 13th century and formed one of the links in a network of strongholds set up all along the valley.

Archaeological excavations undertaken at the Canourgue tower have shown that it was the keep of a castle that was probably abandoned at the end of the 14th century or the beginning of the 15th. There was, apart from the fortification, a whole group of settlements whose ruins are now obliterated by the vegetation, but are still there.

An interpretation trail that follows the footsteps of the lords of the tower of Canourgue has been set up by the Cévennes National Park. It starts at the parking lot of the hamlet of Biasses located on the D993.
