ROC DE PEYRE

Located in the heart of the Terres de Peyre, the site of the Roc du Peyre culminates at an altitude of nearly 1180 metres. From the 12th century onwards, the site was crowned by a fortified village, fief of the barony of Peyre. Today, there are no remains of this fortress, destroyed during the Wars of Religion in the first half of the 17th century in retaliation.

Located in the heart of the Terres de Peyre, the Roc de Peyre site culminates at an altitude of nearly 1180 metres and dominates the Aubrac plateau. Because of this exceptional geographical situation and formerly very strategic, the site was surmounted from the 12th century by a castrum, a fortified village, seat of the lords of Peyre. From the 10th century onwards, the Peyre lordship experienced a meteoric rise and became one of the most powerful families in Gévaudan and the kingdom of France

Today there are no remains of the fortress, destroyed during the Wars of Religion in retaliation. The conversion of the family to Protestantism led to the organization of the Protestant resistance in North Gévaudan during the Wars of Religion. It is for this reason that in 1633, Cardinal Richelieu ordered the dismantling of the castle.

The Barons of Peyre later chose other locations to rebuild their headquarters (notably at La Baume).
