PORTE DU THERON

That's the east gate of Marvejols. The houses built outside this door take the shape of a small terrace called "ravelin" on which the chain drawbridge was supported. The great external ditch, with water in this lower part of the town, played a real role in the defence of Marvejols at the time of the Wars of Religion. Heron's door still has all its hinges.

This is the eastern gateway to Marvejols. The houses built outside this gate are shaped like a small terrace called a "ravelin", on which the chain drawbridge rested.

The large outer moat, with water in this lower part of the town, played a key role in Marvejols' defense during the Wars of Religion.

The porte du Théron still has all its hinges.

Note the roof detached from the towers, forming a kind of attic*. Here too, the reuse of military architecture for residential purposes necessitated a number of adaptations. For example, the central core of the door was filled in to allow passage from one tower to another, thanks to a corridor on each floor.

*A small additional storey to cushion a facade.

Today, the Porte du Théron is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside
