MAISON DITE "ANCIENNE SYNAGOGUE"
"Authentic medieval building that has preserved a distribution by three floors of galleries on the courtyard" (Mérimée database).
This private mansion marks the presence of a small Jewish community in Mende between 1229 and 1306, the date of the expulsion of the Jews from the royal cities ordered by Philippe le Bel.
After 1310, the synagogue was assigned to a community of priests who remained there until the Revolution.
Sold as national property during the Revolution, the building was then divided up.
Today it belongs to the Mende City Hall and its interior courtyard is accessible during guided tours of the historic center organized by the Tourist Office.
