CHÂTEAU DE LA BAUME

Classified as a historical monument, the Château de la Baume is the only large castle built in the department in the classical period. It depended on the powerful barony of the Lords of Peyre. Nicknamed the "Versailles of Gévaudan", it was built and laid out under Italian and Versailles influences The castle is open to the public although it is private property.

The castle of La Baume, nicknamed "the Versailles of Gévaudan", is the only large castle built in the department in the classical period. It was the seat of the barony of the lords of Peyre.

The oldest document mentioning the castle dates back to 1275. At the end of the Wars of Religion, the barons of Peyre decided to rebuild a new castle to accommodate them, in 1632, after the dismantling of the seat of the barony of Roc de Peyre and they chose La Baume. The castle was then enlarged between 1690 and 1715 to create the southern extension, in order to recall Versailles.

The current state of the castle dates from the beginning of the 18th century. Its exterior appearance is closer to the medieval defensive buildings. Its interior decoration is exuberant with Italian and Versailles influence.

The owners are descendants of Emmanuel de Las Cases, the famous exile companion of Napoleon Bonaparte (I).
