CHATEAU DE CASTANET

On the banks of the Altier river stands the imposing Château de Castanet. This 16th-century edifice is located in the commune of Pourcharesses, near Villefort in Lozère. FREE VISIT 2 - 7 PM - EVERY DAY except Saturday, in July and August only Last admission 6.30pm

The name comes from the Occitan word for chestnut, the dominant tree in the Cévennes and Mont Lozère regions.

The manse of Castanet dates back to the 13th century, but may be older. At that time, the lord of Hérail, co-lord parier of La Garde-Guérin and vassal of the bishop of Mende, owned the mane. Until 1550, the mane was inherited, in addition to the prestigious right to be parier de la Garde-Guérin. It was Robert Brun who owned the manse from 1550 onwards. On December 14, 1571, he sold it to Jacques Isarn, from a middle-class family in Villefort.

Every year, Château de Castanet offers a program of summer exhibitions open to the public. The 2026 season is currently in preparation.
